Is there a difference between my perception of reality and reality Case Study
Is there a difference between my perception of reality and reality itself - Case Study Example Perception is the individual mind set of people who influences the manner in which they view life and make a decision when responding to life situations. For instance some people perceive war to be the only sure way to bring peace to people to warring groups while others view it as an evil act which is conducted by people who are against peace and with evil intentions. The way those two groups perceive war is totally different and thus it influences the manner in which they are going to make a judgement concerning that particular subject (Xlibris Corp, 2012). Despite perception varying from one individual to the next, oneââ¬â¢s perception can be influenced or manipulated by situations that occur in the environment or by reality itself. Whenever someone has been exposed to reality he/she will tend to be influenced into changing his/her mind set thus, changing the perception. Perception is not always correct since it can be distorted from the general expectation of life (Xlibris Corp, 2012). Thus, reality plays an important role in influencing the cognition of a person and in influencing ones perception in the right way. However, it is not always right for oneââ¬â¢s perception to be influenced since the manner in which one perceives things is the same way life unfolds. Thus, it is right to take life in your way as it will unfold, in the same way; hence one can lead an interesting life. If someone is so concerned in being influenced by the perception of others he/she will always fell inferior to the cognition of others thus leading to a miserable life as one cannot be content with his/her own self (Xlibris Corp, 2012). Some critics argue that there is nothing like reality as it all depends on how individuals perceive things and situations that determine on what can be regarded as real or not. Strong believers of individual perception do not find much sense in reality as they act in the manner in which their perception

Electronic Communications Privacy Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Electronic Communications Privacy Act - Essay Example , which require a legal framework to manage the workings of the new features created by the development in computer and internet sector (Matsuura, 2003). Ideally, the act seeks to ensure sanity and protection of privacy, but the rapid changes in the communication sector especially in the internet-based sector has rendered the act virtually ineffective while other laws such as the patriotic act have made it impossible to enhance privacy. In its present form, the ECPA has countless flaws owing to the dynamism of communication. The inadequacies of the act can be linked to its enactment. The ECPA was enacted in 1986 when the communication sector was not expansive or as specialized and innovative as it is today. As such, most of the concerns were addressed generally. Today privacy has become a major concern but back then, it was not a key concern. Fundamentally, the act seeks to enhance privacy but in light of other laws such as the patriotic act, it is ineffective (Electronic Privacy Information Center, 2012). The patriotic act granted the government huge leeway in compromising or breaching privacy in all the forms of electronic communications. The government can compromise the privacy of communications in the form of images, signs, writings and even oral communication due to the flaws of the law as revealed by United States v. Councilman. In the above suit, the defendant sought to block the government from accessing e mail in temporary storage prior to the recipient reading them. Nevertheless, on appeal, a full court of appeal revealed that e-mails on transit are not protected from surveillance (Packard, 2012). From the above, it is evident that despite having strict clauses on privacy ECPA is inherently inadequate. Surveillance is one of the most controversial issues in America owing to its extensive nature. The surveillance involves electronic data, which is protected by this act. Nonetheless, the government has seemingly unlimited access to electronic data. One of

A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay -- English Literature
A Good Man Is Hard To Find The story "A Good Man is Hard To Find" begins with a family planning to take a vacation to Florida. The grandmother who does not want to take the vacation in Florida is persuading the family. She has read about a crazed killer by the name of the Misfit, who is on the run, heading for Florida. The mambas of her family ignore the grandmother. On the day of the trip, ironically, the grandmother is dressed in her Sunday best. She is decked in white gloves and navy blue dress with matching hat. She is the first one in the car and ready to go. O'Connor is getting the reader to visualize the Southern culture. The grandmother's purpose of dressing this way is to be recognized as a lady, in case someone saw her dead on the highway. This tells me the grandmother's thoughts of death are shallow. Later in the story, the Misfit says, "There never was a body that gave the undertaker a tip." (qtd, in DiYanni 202) The grandmother's readiness for death is an indication that she does not want to go where there is a prisoner on the loose. However, her read...

The Concept of Total War
The period between 1914-1918, or most commonly known as World War I, is historically significant. Aside from its unforgettable aftermath wherein a number of casualties and various war damages were recorded, World War I also paved the way for the emergence of the concept of total war. It is through this total war that the series of wars that followed within the international system based their strategies and learning experiences making the subsequent conflicts a lot worse. Total War, according to Stephen Badsey, is considered as the ââ¬Å"organization of entire societies for war in social, economic, and even spiritual senseâ⬠(Badsey n. ). It is a war strategy wherein combatants forcibly involved properties, lands, and attenuate the vulnerable civilians or non-combatants in their struggle against the enemies instead of just focusing on conquering their military targets. Basically, it is an armed force waged using all national power, human strength and material goods, considering that the traditional presence of big battalions are insufficient without the ââ¬Å"Home Frontâ⬠support (Kiraly 15). This movement showed tremendous effects in the country's populace and showed social changes. The economy of states involved in total war is strictly controlled to monitor and regulate the flow of money and where finances are utilized. Moreover, through the influence of media and nationalistic propaganda, the citizens are moved to strengthen their support for the total war (Schmiechen 459). As stated earlier, the First World War gauged the intensity of the wars after it. Because of the tragedy caused by World War I, many citizens became very suspicious and fearful of their surroundings and the eventualities around them. The American public is no exemption to this escalating fear and apprehension with the actions and decisions done by their country either domestically or internationally. Post ââ¬â World War I As eventful as the World War I, the Great Depression of 1929 ââ¬â 1933 sson took place. It was also known as the Global Economic Slump wherein the Wall Street stock market crash affected the American financial system (Baylis & Smith 57). Because of this economic depression, many Americans feared a massive social consequence manifested in a surge of unemployment. Unemployment was perceived as USAââ¬â¢s primary enemy because it resulted to a number of impoverished families suffering because of the collapse in the market (Baylis & Smith 59). Different reactions emerged during this period including the governmentââ¬â¢s economic response by pursuing protectionism and avoid importing products from other countries. The period of depression ended with the emergence of World War II. Supposedly, the years 1939-1945 should relieve the American society from the economic slump it previously experienced, however, circumstances worsen as conflict escalates among the involved factions in the war. One of the domestic enemies America experienced during this period was the massive influx of immigrants from different parts of Europe. This is a manifestation of the escalating civil war among the different Western countries. As a response to this, US modified its migration quota system to filter out desirable citizens to enter their land. Immigrants from Great Britain and Ireland were awarded generous qoutas as compared to Russians and Italians as they were affiliated with the emerging powerful satellite group, the Soviet Union, threatening the American democratic system (ââ¬Å"Immigration Through Timeâ⬠). After World War II, the Cold War era, from 1945-1990 followed. It was a war between two ââ¬Å"Superpowers,â⬠the United States of America and the Soviet Union (Baylis & Smith 72). Many proxy wars in the Third World took place during this period, dragging countries all over the world in the war and dividing them between the two superpowers. The emerging power of USSR threatened the American society as the manifestation of communism is felt world wide and even domestically. The eventualities during the Cuban missile crisis triggered greater military threat in the country as the Soviet Union is believed to be keeping weapons of mass destruction. America reacted in this situation by entering the global battlefield with the USSR and pursued an arms race (Baylis & Smith 81). By the end of the cold war period, USA emerged as the most powerful country and helped some European countries rehabilitate the damages of war. The country continued to emerge as a powerful country wherein they are perceived as primary trade partners world wide. However, in the post 9/11 period, American society placed the blame to the Twin Tower tragedy to the terrorists who were considered as ââ¬Å"the axis of evilâ⬠which includes some rogue states in West Asia (Chenoy 13). As a preemptive response by the present administration, they pursued counter-terrorism campaign and established the ââ¬Å"coalition of the willingâ⬠to overcome acts of terrorism world wide (Schifferes n. p). The periods of conflict that America experienced over the years showed how the public is very much affected. From the Great Depression and the fear of unemployment, World War II and the problem on undesirable immigrants, the Cold War era and the emergence of communism, and post 9/11 period with the threats of terrorism, the American public is imparted with so much problems and enemies both domestically and internationally which greatly affects the country's internal affairs and national interest to pursue. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the government to ensure that the public interest is taken into consideration in their policy-making to assure the security and safety of their citizens.

Aims and Objectives of the Copthorne Hotel Essay
An aim is a long term goal that is set by a business in order to improve the quality and value of their company. The Copthorne hotel has four main aims. Their first main aim is ââ¬ËTo Make a Profit for Shareholdersââ¬â¢. The Copthorne hotel and the Millennium group is a plc, meaning their shares are sold to the public on the stock exchange. When a share of a business is bought, they become a shareholder, meaning they own a small stake in the business. They aim to increase their profits for the benefit of their shareholders, the more profit they are making, the higher the dividend their shareholders are going to get back. If for example the value of their shares decline in the stock market, the shareholders may wish to sell them, in order to invest in a company making profit, because in a more valuable company they will be paid a higher dividend. Their second aim is ââ¬ËTo Increase Market Shareââ¬â¢. Market share is the amount/percentage of a particular category of market owned by a certain company. The Copthorne wants to increase their Market Share in order to increase the popularity of the business. An increase in their market share would mean more rooms being booked, more weddings planned and more conferences put in place. All together meaning that the Copthorne would also see an influx in its income, meaning the company has the money to expand further and beat the competition. In order to this they rely heavily on their customers returning, and new customers coming through their doors. In order for this to happen however, they need to meet the customerââ¬â¢s high expectations and provide a high quality, good value for money service. Their third aim is to ââ¬ËIncrease the number of hotels globallyââ¬â¢. The millennium group currently have over 100 hotels worldwide, 13 of which are based in Europe. Over the last few years, the company has grown and expanded slowly, as the business becomes more popular. The term ââ¬Ëfloated on the stock exchangeââ¬â¢ means that anyone can buy shares in the business, based on the information read in the companyââ¬â¢s prospectus. This simply means that the Copthorne can raise money in order to expand. The Copthorne has been floatedà on the stock exchange as it is a Public Limited Company (plc). A majority shareholder is someone who owns at least 51% of the shares in the company, meaning that they have the most influence of the Copthorneââ¬â¢s decisions, and therefore decide on where, when and how to expand. Finally, their last aim is to ââ¬Ëconstantly improve customer serviceââ¬â¢. Customer service means the quality of the service/goods given to the customer, whether it be before, during, or after. If a company provides a top quality customer service then they are more likely to retain their customers, and in addition attract new ones by word of mouth, meaning that the customer tells their friends, they tell their friends etc. Therefore it is extremely important for a company such as the Copthorne because the business is constantly trying to expand, and having good reviews plays a vital, big role in supporting this. Copthorne Objectives The objectives that the Copthorne set are the shorter term, smaller steps that they take in order to achieve their aims. However as the aims change over time due to external factors affecting the business, the objectives will change and alter as well. In order to achieve their first objective ââ¬Ëto make a profit for shareholdersââ¬â¢ they need to meet or exceed the financial targets set by the Millennium group. These targets may be to increase the numbers of people in the restaurant, sell more rooms, or lower their prices. Overall, their wish is to attract more people through the doors in order to make a profit, so that their shareholders can be paid back. Their second aim was ââ¬Ëto increase their market shareââ¬â¢. To do this they constantly monitor their global position against their competitors and expand globally within the continents they operate in. This means that they measure their success against their competitors, they constantly wish to be beating them and make bigger amounts of profit, so they have the financial room to grow and expand. To succeed in their third objective ââ¬Ëto increase the numbers of hotels globallyââ¬â¢ they try to open a new hotel in a major city across the world every year. By doing this not only are they achieving their aim but increasing the amount of income they get, and therefore helping to achieve some of their earlier aims. Their fourth and final objective is to provide excellent facilities and customer service measured by achieving 95% or more on customer satisfaction surveys, this is set in order to assist their 4th aim of trying to constantly improve customer service. When a customer is staying at the Copthorne they ask them to fill in a survey, these surveys involve questions to do with, the customer service, the rooms, the food, the facilities etc. If they manage to achieve this aim it is displayed on their website and in other advertisements on order to persuade people to stay, if someone sees that another person likes a business, and rates it highly, then they themselves are more likely to try and experience the high quality of service as well. Mission Statement The Copthornes mission statement is to ââ¬ËGet it right first time, every time and think like a Customerââ¬â¢. The ââ¬Ëget it right first time and every timeââ¬â¢ means that the staff working within the facility need to try and do everything perfectly, without fault, in their first attempt, there are no second chances as people tend to form their opinions on first impressions. The second part ââ¬Ëthink like a customerââ¬â¢ means that the staff and employees in order to maintain a high standard service need to put themselves in the customers shoes and think what would I expect from a hotel of such high standards? And they need to perform to this level. Overall this Mission statement helps the Copthorne employees stay focused, and stay on the right track to success. A high quality service results in the end in increased sales and therefore increased profits.

Burnt by the Sun - Film Crtitique essays
Burnt by the Sun - Film Crtitique essays In analyzing the two main characters-Kotov and Mitia-there are many distinctions and similarities between the two, insomuch that they were both burnt by the sun. The film takes place in 1936 Russia, nineteen years after the Communist Revolution and well into Stalins purges. The film centers on Colonel Kotov, a revolutionary in the Bolshevik uprising and Mitia, a member of Stalins secret political police who was sent to retrieve Kotov for his execution. In analyzing Kotov, one can understand why Stalin would consider him a threat to his desire to be dictator of Russia. The Colonel was a strong and powerful man, and very charismatic. He rose from meager rural beginnings to be transformed by Socialism into the man Stalin wanted as men of Russia-a good soldier who loves his people, his revolution, and his Motherland. Respected and glorified by all, nothing seems to be able to get in his way as demonstrated in the opening scenes of the movies as he orders a battalion of tanks and airplanes to withdraw their maneuvers in a rural area. The film therefore illustrates the age-old injustices inherent in absolute power and how easily past loyalties is betrayed, or in other words, how he (and later Mitia) were burnt by the sun. Kotov, does not exude the image of one who could be accused of treason. Accounts of amazing confessions aired on the radio of trials and executions of other leading Communists didnt perturb him. When Stalin's political police force, comes to arrest him, Kotov remains very calm, expecting to resolve everything with a simple phone call to the Kremlin, but when the arresting officers turn violent, Kotov understands. Good vs. Well, Bad vs. Badly
Good vs. Well, Bad vs. Badly Good vs. Well, Bad vs. Badly Good vs. Well, Bad vs. Badly By Maeve Maddox Do you cringe when you ask someone ââ¬Å"How are you?â⬠and the person replies, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m goodâ⬠? Why? Perhaps, like me, you are expecting the response to be ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m well, thank you,â⬠and the ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m goodâ⬠offends your expectations. However, if your complaint is that good is an adjective and well is an adverb, youââ¬â¢re on thin ice. The fact that well is the adverbial form of good is irrelevant because in this expression, both good and well are being used as adjectives. Good and well function as more than one part of speech: The diner is noted for good food. (adjective) A true statesman is dedicated to the common good. (noun) You speak French well. (adverb) He was ill, but now he is well. (adjective) Life is like a well. (noun) As an adjective, well is usually used to mean ââ¬Å"sound in health,â⬠or ââ¬Å"recovered from sickness.â⬠An earlier sense of ââ¬Å"prosperousâ⬠survives in the expressions ââ¬Å"well to do,â⬠and ââ¬Å"well off.â⬠One of the numerous meanings of good is ââ¬Å"morally commendable, virtuous.â⬠This definition is invoked by speakers who wish to ridicule the ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m goodâ⬠response. For example, in an episode of 30 Rock, Tracy Jordan corrects another character who has said ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m goodâ⬠this way: ââ¬Å"Superman is good; youââ¬â¢re well.â⬠Another meaning of good is ââ¬Å"satisfactory, unimpaired, not depressed or dejected.â⬠Although the ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m goodâ⬠response still strikes many ears as colloquial at best, it is not ungrammatical. Speakers who object to the usage are free to avoid it in their own speech, but they may wish to refrain from ridiculing its use in the speech of others. While weââ¬â¢re at it, this may be a good place to mention a common error with the adjective bad and its adverbial form badly. Here are some incorrect uses of badly from the web: Facebook makes us feel badly about ourselves. I think awards just make the other kids who didnââ¬â¢t get awards feel badly. Maybe her intention isnââ¬â¢t to make you feel badly, and youââ¬â¢re making yourself feel badly. I guess I just sometimes feel badly for my extrovert kids. These are all from commenters and amateur bloggers, but even professional writers fall into the error: People who go through life applying a measuring ruler against every situation judging its ââ¬Å"fairnessâ⬠will often feel badly and negative because of it. ââ¬âJohn M. Grohol, Doctor of Psychology You must never feel badly about making mistakesâ⬠Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth In each instance, the expression should be ââ¬Å"feel bad,â⬠not ââ¬Å"feel badly.â⬠Badly is an adverb. It must be used with a verb that expresses an action. Feel can be either a linking verb or an action verb, but when it is used in the sense of experiencing an emotion, it is a linking verb and takes an adjective to complete it: ââ¬Å"I feel bad.â⬠As an action verb, feel means ââ¬Å"to handleâ⬠or ââ¬Å"to touch.â⬠For example, a person who ââ¬Å"feels badlyâ⬠would have trouble learning to read Braille. Careers in Biosciences Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Careers in Biosciences - Essay Example I also have excellent computing skills that will come in handy when pursuing my career. Of late, I have been analyzing the available careers for me, and the more I came to learn about bioinformatics the more I got interested in it. I now have my passion buried deep inside bioinformatics. The job market in bioinformatics has changed considerably in recent years. This can be attributed to the increase in academic programs in bioinformatics, which has lead to the increase in the number of graduates who are chasing jobs. Nowadays, employers look for employees who are qualified in this field. There is also an increase in the number of academic jobs compared to industrial jobs. Additionally, the number of research programs that require bioinformatics skills has been on the increase (Belikoff et al, 2004 p56). The area of bioinformatics that has interested me the most is the database administration. I am critically thinking of majoring in this field. On a day-to-day basis, database administration involves the designing and maintaining of huge databases, which hold data related to biochemical information and genome sequences. Databases need to be constantly updated, and this is the work of a database administrator (Camenson, 2006 p67). Database administration also involves developing of search algorithms that must be intelligent, and are used to search through the database, to retrieve the relevant information (Lacroix & Terence, 2007 p90). The major employer of bioinformatics graduates is the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, other companies involved in biotech, personal care products and industrial organisms and agricultural companies require individuals who are skilled in bioinformatics (Moussalli et al, 2010 p87). Potential employers look for graduates who have been trained in computer skills and biological sciences. Those in the biomedical sciences with Information Technology background have an added advantage.

Disaster Management System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Disaster Management System - Essay Example More often, the damage is so sudden that all precautionary and preventive measures fail. For example, the hurricane that caused the devastation of Smallville, Florida led to a complete revision of the city's disaster management system. Hence, we define our problem, "there is a need to establish emergency management systems where they are not aligned and strengthen such systems where already applied". After defining the problem we can establish the objective of this essay as "design, develop and ensure successful implementation of a disaster management system which minimizes the probability of destruction caused by a disaster, whether natural or man-made." It is evident that survival chances after a disaster are widely improved if people, governments, organizations and emergency services have sufficient preparation of essentially required plans and equipments. Such measures are highly dependent on the location and can vary with the kind of disasters that may occur in the area. This give rise to the concept of disaster management which is basically a process of continous planning aimed at prevention.. Disaster management therefore refers to programs and measures designed to prevent, mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from the aftereffects of disasters. Activities that are designed to reduce the risks of damage caused to public through disasters come under mitigation. It involves continous efforts to educate governments, organizations and general public on measures they can take to diminsh loss and injury. Thus, mitigations attempt to prevent the disaster from occurring, or reduce its effects. For example, projects like raising the level of a city and efficient drainage system can prevent floods to cause massive damages. Preparedness Preparedness sets out a series of measures to prepare the masses to tackle with natural or man-made disasters. Usually a policy is directed by the government to prepare for nonmilitary civil emergencies before they happen. Many cities also offer training for community emergency response team. Training is provided to teams of amateur emergency workers in every neighborhood. These are truly useful because in an emergency, emergency service providers are instantly overloaded. The trained amateurs can handle emergency rescues instantly and assist professional emergency services. Response The degree of responsiveness of emergency management services is cruical in minimizing the effects of disaster. A very common problem however is the lack of trained respondents in case of mass emergencies. There are always fewer people handling the situation and larger people suffering from it. Recovery Rebuilding damaged infrastructure and restoring people to their normal course of life is covered under the recovery phase. The essential recovery is to repair bridges and roads so as to give access to rescue teams to the affected areas as well as provide exit routes for the people affected by the disaster. Roads also provide a way to delivering essential supplies like food and water. It is important to understand that all four phases work together. For instance, if the mitigation phase is flawed, the recovery phase even if strong is going to suffer. Human behavior in a Moment of Crises Panic is the right word to define the immediate response of people.
The Benefits and Dangers of Nuclear Energy Essay
The Benefits and Dangers of Nuclear Energy - Essay Example However, there are plenty of risks associated with the exploitation of nuclear energy. ââ¬Å"What makes decisions on nuclear energy hard is that they do not call for one final apocalyptic choice between the obviously good civilian uses that lead to peace and the obviously bad military alternatives that lead to warâ⬠(Wohlstetter, 1968, p.2). This paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy Advantages of nuclear energy A 1,000 megawatt equivalent (MWe) coal plant with optimal pollution abatement equipment will annually emit into the atmosphere 900 tons of sulfur dioxide, 4,500 tons of nitrous oxide, 1,300 tons of particulates, and 6.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. By contrast, a nuclear plant of 1,000 MWe capacity produces annually some 35 tons of highly radioactive spent fuel (Sovacool, 2007, p.107-108). The above statistics clearly suggest that nuclear energy is more environmental friendly than other energy sources. While majority of the other prominent energy sources are causing huge damages to the environment, nuclear energy is comparatively safe and secure as far as environmental problems are concerned. Rangarajan, (2010) mentioned that ââ¬Å"Reduction in the CO^ emissions is one of the most important benefits in the use of nuclear energyâ⬠(Rangarajan, 2010, p.6). ... Carbon emission is not at all a problem for nuclear energy as the technology used to exploit nuclear energy liberates no greenhouse gases. Edelhart, (1976) pointed out that ââ¬Å"In spite of the high construction costs, uranium fuel was so cheap that it kept overall investment on a par with other energy ââ¬Ësystemsâ⬠(Edelhart, 1976, p.52). Uranium is abundant in many of the countries and it can be sued effectively as a fuel to operate nuclear power plants. In short, nuclear energy is highly economical compared to other energy sources even though the construction costs of nuclear power plants are slightly expensive. ââ¬Å"The amount of energy generated in a nuclear plant is many times greater than that produced by other conventional meansâ⬠(Rangarajan, 2010, p.6). Einsteinââ¬â¢s famous formula E=MC2 can be used to calculate the energy produced by nuclear power plants. Here E represents energy, M represents mass of the nuclear fuel and C represents the velocity of l ight. Since velocity of light is 3 X 108 m/s, 1 kilo gram of nuclear fuel can generate an energy equivalent to 9 X 1016 Joules. No other energy source can provide such huge amounts of energy as nuclear power plants do. Nuclear fission is the technology used in nuclear power plants. Chain reaction is taking place in nuclear fission process. If not controlled properly, chain reaction can cause explosions. However, we can control chain reactions with the help of suitable materials. According to Sakharov, (1978) ââ¬Å"Nuclear energy is the only economically feasible energy source in the next few decades-of replacing the use of oilâ⬠(Sakharov, 1978, p.13). ââ¬Å"It is also not necessary to develop the technology needed for

Social Welfare for Children in Kuwait Research Paper
Social Welfare for Children in Kuwait - Research Paper Example In general, the state is committed to providing the welfare of children as stipulated by the constitutional principles, as well as Kuwaitââ¬â¢s international obligations under the conventions and treaties it has signed and ratified. Some of these treaties and conventions include the 1973ââ¬â¢s International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention, which concerns the minimum age for admission to employment (No. 138), and the 1999ââ¬â¢s ILO convention that concerns primary with the prohibition and immediate action for eliminating worst forms of child labor (no. 182). The government has taken the convention regarding the rights of children, and two optional protocol measures to protect the rising generation from any forms of exploitation, and spiritual or physical harm.à In addition, it guarantees a right to education, introduced free compulsory education, and delivers treatment as well as healthcare for infectious diseases. Therefore, the government has taken up a number of mea sures as discussed below in order to keep up with these principles (Worldmark Encyclopedia of Nations, 2007). à The government provides primary healthcare along with preventive services for children, in order to lower the mortality rates, and encourage healthy living behaviors. Furthermore, it also shields children from exposure to delinquency, neglect, bodily harm and infringements of their freedom through criminalizing such acts and imposing very high penalties on them (United Nations, 2011).à In order to deal with these.

Buying your first home Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Buying your first home - Assignment Example Buying your very first home may be intense but worthwhile. Though you may consider it an investment, you may decide, however, if it would be a lifestyle investment or a financial investment. Whatever it is, homeownership is a worthwhile venture.First time home buyers need to consider many things before finally buying. These things are embodied in a handbook: Guide to First Time Home Purchases. A comprehensive guide consisting of step-by step instructions and recommendations, you cannot help but take note and appreciate its contents. For instance, you will find reminders such as setting your goals in order to have a focus on your single project - your home; controlling your debts so that there will be no problem during the payments of monthly amortization; working your money so you have to withdraw your savings from a low-interest bank and deposit in a high interest yielding bank for fast growth; checking your credit rating for a good credit history; doing your homework by comparing i nterest rates of lending companies, if you opt to make a home loan; and last but not the least, getting your entitlements which means that in some countries, there are bonuses for first time home buyer through a loan. These features make the 'Guide to First Time Home Purchases' worthwhile. The competence statement, "Can understand the broader context of first time home purchases" is a moving statement that inspires first time home buyers to carry out the project. ... Goal setting means aiming for something. When you aim for something, it includes affordability. Affordability does not only refer to budget related conditions, it could also be related to strength. If you are healthy and strong, you can afford to work continuously and earn income. For budget conditions, affordability can work for you "keep in mind that any existing or current debt will reduce the amount that you can loan for your home" (Money Magazine, 2006). To carry the project, ask yourself if you can afford to spend that much and if not, you should be willing to live in a house which is cheaper and within your personal budget. II. RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES For this research work, the researcher used the descriptive method to gather data about the present conditions and to interpret these data through contrast, comparison, and relationships. A questionnaire which is designed by the researcher was utilized as an instrument to collect some data relevant to the research. Informal interviews with home buyers during the distribution and retrieval of the questionnaires were conducted. Printed books and internet articles related to the study were also read. III. RESEARCH FINDINGS Related literature and studies for this particular study were reviewed. The review provided necessary information in formulating the method and procedure used in undertaking the research. A. Literature Review Sheller (2008) commented that in buying a house the buyer must know that housing rates may remain steady for a year, goes up next year, and higher next year; it never go down. It is different from stocks whose prices are not fixed - it could be high

The length of an electrically conductive metal wire Essay Example for Free
The length of an electrically conductive metal wire Essay The results of the experiment, however, do not adhere to the direct proportionality relationship predicted in the hypothesis. In the hypothesis a zero value for wire length is predicted to induce a zero value for wire resistance. Intuitively, this should be the case. However, regardless of what linear line of regression one examines from the ones plotted, it is obvious that the experiment indicates the existence of electric resistance even when the wire has no length. This result is indicated through the intersection of the regression curves with positive Y values. The zero length resistance varies from 0. 02 to 0. 0578 ohms. The existence of errors in the experiment, namely systematic ones, may help explain the result. Errors The method for the experiment contained some errors. Some of those are evident when examining the results of the experiment. Others are very small, and did not have a great effect on the final outcomes. The most prominent source of error had to do with the existence of additional resistance in the circuit used. The metal wire used, since it wasnt a wire meant for electrical circuits, naturally offered the greatest resistance to current flow. Nevertheless, the connecting wires also contained some inevitable resistance. Additionally, the ammeter, and power supply also had some internal resistance (the voltmeter did as well, but this is necessary for the procurement of accurate voltage values). Since current flowed through all those, the resistance values obtained did not represent solely the resistance of the metal wire. This probably explains the systematic error foreboded in the conclusion. The existence of resistance in other pieces of apparatus except the metal wire allowed for the possibility of resistance even when the metal wire would have no length. Another source of error existed in the measurement of the wire length used in the circuit. The metal wire used was manipulated to assume a straight form. However, even after it was firmly attached to a table, it was not fully stretched. In some of the cases, it may have bent slightly, making the total wire length greater than what was measured. This could have contributed some additional, and unwanted, resistance to the wire. After all, a longer wire offers more resistance to current flow. Altogether, an addition to the systematic overestimation of the resistance of the metal wire also came from this error source. Though negligible, some error could have sprung from the heating of the wire used. As current was allowed to flow through the metal wire, atoms of the wire collided with the electrons flowing, causing the wire to heat up. If the wire werent allowed to cool down before another measurement was taken, then it would have posed additional resistance to the subsequent current flows, since resistance rises with temperature. Again, the method used in this experiment allowed for the existence of additional resistance in the wire that was not taken into account. Improvements In light of the errors noted, or for the need to perfect other experiments of the same type, improvements to the method can be offered. Firstly, the error involving the length of the metal wire could be minimized in two ways. Either a much more flexible wire could be used for the allowance of a straighter metal wire, or a greater effort could be made to stretch the existent wire so that it is much more straight. In both ways, the length measured for the metal wire would be more representative of the actual length being used. Another improvement could deal with minimizing the existence of additional resistance in the circuit besides that of the metal wire examined. This could be done in several ways. The connecting wires used could be shorter, meaning their resistance would be smaller. A power supply and ammeter with smaller internal resistances could also be used. In either of the cases, additional resistance in the circuit would decrease, and the systematic error in resistance minimized. Finally, though not too necessary, it is possible to improve the experiment by minimizing resistance distortions due to temperature increases. A simple way would be to wait at least 3 minutes between each current flow induced through the wire. This way, the whole circuit together with the wire itself would have time to cool down. Wire temperature would hence not be a factor distorting the resistance values being measured, as it would be more or less the same in all measurements. Nevertheless, it may be that the distortions to resistance values caused by temperature increase are so small that this improvement on the whole is futile. Another minor improvement to the method would be the use of a switch. This way, current flow could be initiated and stopped on demand (i. e. immediately). It would be of course necessary to use a switch that offers little resistance. Otherwise, the current construction of the circuit is preferable.

Patient Billing Software System Information Technology Essay
Patient Billing Software System Information Technology Essay In todays world, the population in various countries is increasing speedily every year, the Medical Billing System has grown-up in importance. The reason for this is that there are far more individuals that have need of some variety of health care, regardless of whether it is physical or mental. In order to receive these services patients need to pay for the services rendered by the hospital. This task requires a billing system that can generate bills of services to patients. Medical professionals are facing problems regarding the billing issue. My project for BSc Computing is to develop a web based patient billing software that is of importance to a hospital. . PHP was selected as the language for implementation and PL/SQL server as the database. The patient information will be stored in the database. Any new patient information can be stored in the database via a patient information input screen. The screen will take as input all the details of the patient, the amount to be paid, etc. The system is designed with the intension of allowing for scalability, portability, and re-use. The design of the system is such that it would permit future integration with other systems like online insurance billing for a patient that has a medical insurance, or even a completely different application. This system is also expected to provide a maximum level of security and reliability. Aim This project is aimed at developing a patient billing software system that is of importance to a hospital. The patient billing system is a local software system. This system can be used to maintain the location and the bed number of each patient either in the ward or the Intensive Care Units (ICU). Information about the patient and the charges to be paid is also stored. OBJECTIVE Research objective To study the feasibility of implementing a practical billing system for a hospital mainly focusing on scalability issues. As the hospital is speedily getting bigger the system should be able support any future expansions such as dealing with patients with health insurance. To conduct series of interviews in order to understand the organisational structure and the existing infrastructure service in the hospital and its problems and develop an alternative scenario for the system. To understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the current infrastructure service and how does the new system will be a benefits to the hospital? To conduct research about how patients billing systems is used in other hospitals? To examine the necessary tools that will be needed for the implementation of the proposed system and also examine whether the proposed system will be compatible with the existing system within the budget. Eg: What type of programming language can be adopted? What type of database would be best suitable for the system? To conduct an interview with the hospital data entry operator and the account department in order to find out the difficulties they are facing when generating bills to their patients. Practical objective The system is developed using PHP as the front end and SQL Server / Oracle as the back end. The following steps will be helpful to start off the project. Study and be comfortable with technologies such as PHP, SQL server / Oracle, Apache and ODBC Connectivity. Decide on the number of wards and the number of beds in each ward. Make a database of all tables and fill some sample data in the tables which can prove helpful for running / testing of the project. Assign a hospital data entry operator who will enter all the patient details, make updating to the table entries via front-end screens as and when a patient is being admitted to the hospital, transferred from a general ward to the ICU and vice versa and discharged from the hospital. Since the real-time project needs to be tested in real-time, you can take hours as days for testing the system. However, the display will still be in days only. Create the front-page of the PBS system giving a brief description about the system and a login box Create the help-pages of the system in the form of QA. This will help you also when implementing the system. Create other sub-systems like screens for various functions (new patient entry, viewing existing patient details, transfer of a patient between ward and ICU, etc). Research about client side and server side programming languages HTML, XHTML, ASP.NET, JSP, PHP, ASP Research about web based data base applications like Oracle,Mysql Research about Unified Modelling Language, Activity diagram, Use case diagram, Class diagram, Sequence diagram, Collaboration diagram Rationale of the project: Outsource medical billing system service provider is doing great help in terms of rendering medical billing services that could be of help to the doctors in order to concentrate more on their patients. The idea of medical billing outsourcing initiated from the need to hire experts in order to perform a minor task related to the medical profession. However, the most concerned issues of hiring a third party to manage the medical billing services are because secrete information about the company can be leaked out by outsourcing employees, even to their competitor and also they do not provide good quality services as most of their staff have limited medical background and all these issues can cause serious damage to the medical practice and finance. However with the introduction of my proposed system, it will result in the overall improvement of the medical billing processes. Significance: The proposed project can have great significance on the finance of the hospital and also reduce the work load from the account department. This does not only limit on the users, but will also be of great help to my studies and my career as well, as it would give me exposure needed in order to develop my skill on PL/SQL, PHP, HTML and RDBMS. Overview: My proposed web based application is fully focused is being user friendly, simple, but highly accurate at the same time. My program consists of different stages (pages). These can be described as follows. The project will provide a web-based platform where the hospital data entry operator can Login to the system through the first page of the application Enter the ward number for the patient either in the general ward or the ICU. Settle all bills pending to be paid by a patient before the patients discharge. Keep a track of all beds occupied / free in both the ward and the ICU. View information of all patients details, their admit time and the amount to be paid. Update the table fields (patient details, the amount to be paid / any balance remaining, the ward number, the bed number, the registration number, case number, etc.) as soon as a new patient is being admitted into the hospital or being discharged from the hospital. REQUIREMENTS System requirement The system requirements gives more details and explain how the user requirements should be provided by the system and can be used as part of the contract for the implementation of the system and should therefore be a complete and consistent specification of the system.(Sommerville, 2007pg.130) Therefore, Due to the nature of the project, the system is web base application that interacts with the user (hospital data entry operator and the account department) on client side and all the processing will be carried out on the server side. Therefore, both the client and the Server side have to meet the following minimum requirements. Software User is going to open the web page of the company that will contain the actual application form and then they have to fill it to make an application for the services. Internet Explorer or any web browser. Internet Connection. Data Base -MySQL server/Oracle (Optional) Client-side and Server-side scripting technologies PHP, ASP.NET, AJAX, Visual basic 6.0 WAMP. Security SSL, Hardware PC with Hard disk space more than 1 GB free always for database. (Optional) Minimum memory of 1GB (Optional) Back up running. Literature View: New technology creates new opportunities for forward-thinking companies. Higher level of automation, high-speed communications and improved access to information can provide significant benefits to a modern business organisation (Paul Boucij, Andrew Greasley, Simon Hickie 2008). Computer technology has highly transformed peoples lives tremendously. This innovation changes the way of our thinking and the way we perform our day by day activities. Computer-based information systems are now used to carry out all functions and activities of an organisation. Nowadays, improved innovations are being put in place in other to help a modern business organisation to make more efficient and automate business processes. Nevertheless, Medical practices are not left out of this great change. In order to run a medical practice appropriately, medical billing has to be automated. Lets imagine that there is no appropriate medical billing in place. What will happen to the issue of billing in medical pra ctices? Of course, the traditional way of billing will be adopted. Traditional way is doing all the medical billing like sending invoices and generating patients bills manually. This system is good if the medical practice wants to stay small. However, the issue of medical billing is sensitive in hospital management as the hospitals cannot afford losses because of careless billing generated from traditional way of billing. According to Charles Darwin, the prominent scientist of nature, said, It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change (Case, 2006 pg 27) The fact about nature is also true in today medical practice that works in a fast changing environment. The most efficient and successful hospitals run their finances with modern medical billing software. There is an urgent need to have a good way of managing the billing issue in a medical practice and this issue can only be managed with the help of good billing software. A good billing software is expected to make sure that the billing calculation are done efficiently and accurately. In addition, it is expected to be available to the users on internet so that medical practitioners can be able to have full access to their billing system anywhere in the world. Therefore, a web based medical billing is required. A Web application is a software application that is deployed on the web. It allows users to accomplish a task like obtaining information about the outstanding bills of a patient or any of the many activities possible on the web (Susan, Melanie, Solomon, Benjamin, 2003). The user can view, manipulate and control the software application through a Web browser connected to a web server through a network such as World Wide Web. In 1989, CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland) proposed the development of the World Wide Web in order to enable high-energy physicists across the world to collaborate through the easy provision and accessibility of information (Graham Curtis and David Cobham, 2002 pg 128). Another important aspect of web application is that there is a real-time update of generated content/data and they can be universally accessed via internet/web by the user. However, The effectiveness of any computerised system is dependent on the soundness of its design and this is particularly true for the database application. The importance of database system cannot be overlooked in medical billing system. For most business organisations, information held in databases can often be more valuable than tangible forms of asset, which are accounted for in monetary terms. To work most effectively for the organisation or company, data stored electronically must be properly managed and protected. (Domanski, peter, Philip, 2000). Thus, a consistence database must be in place in order to avoid inaccurate analyses of stored information, poor cash flow for the hospital and Patient dissatisfaction with the hospital. A web based billing software component comprises the Database Management system and the application program Methodologies: Different methodologies can be used for a project. However the appropriate one can increase the chances of better results. I have chosen to use the Unified Process approach and the reasons are; It concentrates on detailed documentation It minimises back tracking It maintains a full constant control on each stage of development We have a clear idea of all the problems during each stage thereby eliminating chance of bigger problems after coding I will get to learn useful tools do design Used case diagrams Enhancing my knowledge of class diagrams Strategic Issues Strategic issue can be explained as the organisation planning options in addressing crucial business issue, engaging in collaborative decision making. The strategic issue that the school of Technology and Management will benefit from the new system are; For the organisation Reduce the amount of paper usage e.g. assignment submission forms Reduce the amount of storage usage cost Reduce the number of manpower usage cost It will reduce the stress levels of the staff It save time for staffs For Student It eliminate assignment printing costs It reduce the long queues at the college e.g. during registration or at the registry. It saves time as well for the student Manpower requirements The project can be completed within 3 4 months if i work fulltime on it. Milestones and Timelines Number Milestone Name Milestone Description Timeline Week no. from the start of the project Remarks 1 Requirements Specification Complete specification of the system (with appropriate assumptions) including the framing of transfer policy of the patient between the ward / IBU, the payment / balance to be made by the patient etc constitutes this milestone. A document detailing the same should be written and a presentation on that be made. 2-3 Attempt should be made to add some more relevant functionality other than those that are listed in this document. 3 Database creation A database of atleast 25 entries of patients with some patients admitted in wards and the remaining in IBU should be entered. 5-7 It is important to finalize on the database at this stage itself so that development and testing can proceed with the actual database itself. 4 High-level and Detailed Design Listing down all possible scenarios (like new patient, transfer of a patient between general ward and IBU, some balance remaining to be paid at the time of discharge etc) and then coming up with flow-charts or pseudocode to handle the scenario. 7-9 The scenarios should map to the requirement specification (i.e., for each requirement that is specified, a corresponding scenario should be there). 5 Implementation of the front-end of the system Implementation of the main screen giving the login, screen that follows the login giving various options, screens for each of the options (shifting of patients, usage of beds). 10-12 During this milestone period, it would be a good idea for the team (or one person from the team) to start working on a test-plan for the entire system. This test-plan can be updated as and when new scenarios come to mind. 6 Integrating the front-end with the database The front-end developed in the earlier milestone will now be able to update the database when a patient discharges. In short, the system should be ready for integration testing. 12-13 7 Integration Testing The system should be thoroughly tested by running all the testcases written for the system (from milestone 5). 14-15 Another 2 weeks should be there to handle any issues found during testing of the system. After that, the final demo can be arranged. 8 Final Review Issues found during the previous milestone are fixed and the system is ready for the final review. 16-18 During the final review of the project, it should be checked that all the requirements specified during milestone number 1 are fulfilled (or appropriate reasons given for not fulfilling the same) Project: Internet based admission finder http://www.buzzle.com/articles/medical-billing-outsourcing.html

Michael Wigglesworth: Devoted Preacherman Overcomes Sickliness And Sill
Michael Wigglesworth: Devoted Preacherman Overcomes Sickliness And Silly Name to Write The First American Bestseller THE MAN (NO MYTH, NO LEGEND) Puritan diaries provide feeble fodder for biographical blurbs. Most diaries focus primarily on spiritual growth. The diary of Michael Wigglesworth is hardly an exception. As noted in the reputable Dictionary of Literary Biography, "Wigglesworthââ¬â¢s private, personal life is surrounded by much ambiguity and conjecture." Wigglesworth (1631-1705) spent the bulk of his life in Malden, Massachusetts, his activities alternating between preaching, writing preachy poetry, and retching in pain. He studied at Harvard and eventually became a practicing physician and minister. He hardly had a year of preaching under his proverbial belt when an obscure "painful, lingering" disease smote him silly. The disease ravaged his innards for nearly twenty years, during which time he had to decline the presidency of Harvard and turn to poetry as a means of preaching from his sickbed (Bosco 337-342). When compared to some of his contemporaries, Wigglesworth composed a fairly slim collection of poetry. However, "The Day of Doom," an Edwards-esque diatribe detailing the second coming of Christ, achieved immense popularity. Hailed by numerous scholars as "the first American bestseller," the poem (comprise of 224 eight-line stanzas) was an immediate success in the American colonies. Generations of schoolchildren memorized it, and their pious parents clutched it closely. Perhaps roused by his success, or by his marriage to a woman 25 years his junior, Wigglesworth "made a startling recovery" and spurned his disease. As Cotton Mather observed, "It pleased God wondrously to restore His Faithful Servant. He... ...mporaries: Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. Wigglesworthââ¬â¢s style "strikes contemporary readers as more appropriate to the pulpit than to poetic stanzas." The didactic style, exactly what Puritan readers favored, displeases most modern readers (Bosco 337-342). Works Cited Bosco, Ronald A. "Michael Wigglesworth." Dictionary of Literary Biography. Mark Twain and William Hazlitt’s Comparison
Ideas can be conveyed in many different ways dependant on the tone, style and diction of the piece. Both William Hazlitt and Mark Twain present a very similar topic in two very different ways. Hazlittâ⬠s ââ¬Å"Education of Womenâ⬠speaks of how classical education is not proper for women. Twainâ⬠s ââ¬Å"Female Suffrageâ⬠reiterates the idea that women should not be able to vote or hold public office. Hazlittâ⬠s 1815 essay is a true opinion of his own feelings against having educated females. 1867, a different time with similar ideas, is the setting of Twainâ⬠s piece. He portrays how the relationship between suffrage and women is completely ridiculous. These authors use different styles to display completely opposite points. Hazlitt wastes no time getting to his point in order to drive it into the minds of the readers. He intends that his audience is only the educated male society. Hazlitt feels that women do not need to be anything more than generally educated. He attempts to convince his audience to accept his views and practice them. Twain, on the other hand, is creating a humorous situation which picks at the number of crazy positions that his wife holds in the community. He is not trying to make the audience think that female suffrage is bad. Twain intends that all people will read his piece for comic relief. Hazlitt uses a very straightforward type of diction in his essay. He explains his points and backs them up with his own opinions and observations. He is very authoritative and arrogant in the way he speaks. ââ¬Å"They are mere egoists. They have no passion for truth, nor any love of what is purely idealâ⬠He feels that his way is the right and only way to think. Since he speaks unto the educated community, he uses well-accepted ideas to communicate his points. Twain uses hyperbole, an approach very different from Halzittâ⬠s style. Twain takes the offices held by his wife and exaggerates them to a humorous level. His diction is very relaxed and calmed. The tone Twain tends to adopt can be misinterpreted as self-centered, but his intent is only to bring a sense of fun to the audience. Hazlittâ⬠s effect of style is very powerful. The essay is very convincing and if it is read to establish ideas, it is nothing short of excellent. The way he compiles the words with his diction, makes the points in his essay incredibly moving. When read by the desired audience, this piece is quite moving and powerful. If a female reads this, the expected reaction is a sense of loathing. Twain accomplishes his goal of being humorous and entertaining. His combination of creative ideas with a serious topic displays his great deal of writing skills. The reader is torn between believing what Twain writes and seeing the humor of hyperbole. The reader is very amused by the decisions that have to be made on interpretation. Hazlitt and Twain use different style, tone and diction to explain to readers their feelings on touchy issues. Hazlitt uses very powerful and persuasive ways of speaking to convince his readers that the education of women is completely unnecessary. Twain is quite entertaining to read because he pokes at his wifeâ⬠s positions. He assumes that the reader will identify that he is only attempting to entertain his audience. Both authors are very different in style but by using different types of writing, they prove totally different points with the same subject.

The Worst Storm in Canadian History
Ice storms, also referred to as glaze storms, cause considerable damage every year to trees in urban and natural areas. They vary considerably in their severity and frequency. Ice storms are result of the ice formation process, which is influenced by general weather patterns. Ice accumulates when super cooled rain freezes on contact with surfaces, such as tree branches, that are at or below the freezing point (0'C). This generally occurs when a winter warm front passes through an area after the ground-level temperature reaches or falls below freezing. Rain falls through layers of cooler air without freezing, becoming super cooled. Periodically, other climatic events, including stationary, occluded, and cold fronts, also result in ice storms. The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the1998 ice storm. This paper features three main section: An introduction, the main body (damage to woodland), and finally, a conclusion. In the main body of this paper, the effect of fire and pest/disease is discussed in detail. In the conclusion, comparison is made between fire and pests/disease versus ice storm. By the end of this paper, one should gain a better understanding of the severity of the 1998 ice storm as well as other damaging agents that affect the woodland in eastern North America Ice storms are often winter's worst hazard. More slippery than snow, freezing rain or glaze is tough and tenacious, clinging to every object it touches. A little can be dangerous, a lot can be catastrophic. Ice storm in Northeastern America has been common but the 1998 ice storm was exceptional. Ice storms are a major hazard in all parts of Canada except the North, but are especially common from Ontario to Newfoundland. The severity of ice storms depends largely on the accumulation of ice, the duration of the event, and the location and extent of the area affected. Based on these criteria, Ice Storm'98 was the worst ever to hit Canada in recent memory. From January 5-10, 1998 the total water equivalent of precipitation, comprising mostly freezing rain and ice pellets and a bit of snow, exceeded 85 mm in Ottawa, 73 mm in Kingston, 108 in Cornwall and 100 mm in Montreal (Environmental Canada, Jan 12/1998). Previous major ice storms in the region, notably December 1986 in Ottawa and February 1961 in Montreal, deposited between 30 and 40 mm of ice ââ¬â about half the thickness from the 1998 storm event! (Environmental Canada, Jan 12/1998). The extent of the area affected by the ice was enormous. Freezing precipitation is often described as ââ¬Å"a line ofâ⬠or ââ¬Å"spotty occurrences ofâ⬠. At the peak of the storm, the area of freezing precipitation extended from Muskoka and Kitchener in Ontario through eastern Ontario, western Quebec and the Eastern Townships to the Fundy coasts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. What made the ice storm so unusual, though, was that it went on for so long. On average, Ottawa and Montreal receive freezing precipitation on 12 to 17 days a year. Each episode generally lasts for only a few hours at a time, for an annual average total between 45 to 65 hours. During Ice Storm'98, it did not rain continuously, however, the number of hours of freezing rain and drizzle was in excess of 80 ââ¬â again nearly double the normal annual total. One of the most appealing features of Eastern Ontario is the extensive forest cover. This is made up of woodlands of varying structure. These woodlands, as well as natural fencerows, windbreaks, and plantations of pine and poplar, dominate the landscape. Icing impacts may best be understood by treating spatially larger scales, starting with individual trees, proceeding to stands, and finally to forest landscapes. Ice damage to trees can range from mere breakage of a few twigs, to bending stems to the ground, to moderate crown loss, to outright breakage of the trunk. In the 1998 Northeastern ice storm, icing lasted long enough that many trees which were bent over had their crowns glued to the snow surface by the ice in many instances for as long as 3 weeks. Some of those trees actually erect posture after release from the snow, while many others remain bent over after 2 years. The severity of damage is generally believed to be closely related to the severity of winds following the heaviest ice accumulations. Damage varies across a range of severity and subtlety: minor branch breakage; major branch loss; bending over of crowns; root damages; breakage of trunks and in some hardwoods, trunks can be split. Depending on the stand composition, the amount of ice accumulation, and the stand history, damage to stands can range from light and patchy to the total breakage of all mature stems. Complete flattening of stands occurred locally in the Northeaster 1998 storm. In response to more moderate damage, effects on stands could include: shifts in over story composition in favor of the most resistant trees; loss of stand growth until leaf area is restored; and loss of value of the growth due to staining or damage to stem form. The term landscape refers to a ââ¬Ëgroupâ⬠or a ââ¬Ëfamilyâ⬠of trees. I use the term vaguely because the size and composition of landscapes differ from region to region. The degree of damage is typically highly skewed by area. For example, in the January 1998 Northeaster storm, 1,800,000 ha of damage in Quebec was assessed by the Ministry of Natural Resource: very severe 4.2%, severe 32.0%, moderate 29.9%, and slight/trace 33.9% (The Science of the Total Environment, Volume: 262, Issue: 3, November 15, 2000, pp. 231-242 ). The effects on entire forest landscapes are highly patchy and variable. They also depend significantly on how landowners respond to the damage. Disturbance caused by diseases, by themselves or in conjunction with disturbance by insects, abiotic factors such as drought, fire and wind, and, increasingly, human activities, has played a critical role in the dynamics of many forest ecosystems in North America. In the predominantly coniferous forests in western North America there are considerable areas undisturbed directly by human activities. In these areas, diseases kill trees or predispose them to other agents of disturbance, resulting in gradual change in stand composition and structure. In areas disturbed by forest management practices of harvesting or exclusion of fire, increased disease incidence and severity has increased the damage caused by disease, and consequently, the rate of change. In the absence of introduced diseases in the predominantly deciduous forests of the Appalachian region of eastern North America, forests are relatively healthy. Here, forests are disturbed significantly by disease only after they are disturbed or stressed by other agents, predominantly defoliating insects and drought. In the eastern montane coniferous forest, chronic wind damage is a major predisposing factor to disease. Past harvesting practices, introduced diseases and insects, and fire exclusion have in some instances resulted in large areas of similar species and relatively similar ages that exacerbate the magnitude and severity of disturbance by disease. Fire is predominantly a natural phenomenon that burns the forest vegetation, polluting the ozone and wiping out the biodiversity. One major distinction between ice storm and forest fire is the way disaster are caused. The majority of forest fire could arguably be a result of human action and ice storm as an ââ¬Ëact of god,â⬠an act that is out of human control. Foresters usually distinguish three types of forest fires: ground fires, which burn the humus layer of the forest floor but do not burn appreciably above the surface; surface fires, which burn forest undergrowth and surface litter; and crown fires, which advance through the tops of trees or shrubs. It is not uncommon for two or three types of fires to occur simultaneously. Forest management has been able to reduce the occurrence of this event but many forest fires are out of armâ⬠s length. Humans cause the majority of forest fires. Campers that do not put out their bond fire or campers littering lit cigarette bud are responsible for such an action. Natural occurrence such as lightning could spark a forest fire but the probability is small compared to human action. The convention way of putting out or reducing the spread of forest fire has been airliners. These airliners are filled with gallons and galloons of water. With limited capacity, these airliners fly above the flame and deposit galloons of water. For the purpose of this paper, deforestation simply means the lost of trees where the lost of trees exceeds the level of sustainable development. One of the major effects of forest fire is the burning of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. This eventually creates a greenhouse affect and global warming. The effect damages our ecosystem as well as reduces one of Canadaâ⬠s precious natural resource. Many projects, both from government funding and corporate sponsors, have done a good job increasing the awareness and risk related to deforestation. Pests directly affect the quantity and quality of forest nursery seedlings and can indirectly cause losses by disrupting reforestation plans or reducing survival of out planted stock. The movement of infested stock can disseminate pests to new areas. Since control of nursery pests may be based on pesticide usage, pest outbreaks may lead to environmental contamination. Woodland damage caused by livestock is a well-documented, yet persistent, forest health problem. Soil compaction, root disturbance and trunk/root collar damage caused by livestock reduce the vigor of trees. This paves the way for armillaria root rot, borers and other opportunistic organisms. Livestock also destroy the forest under story (reproduction), which hastens soil erosion and limits the future productivity of the site. The resulting forest decline reduces the quality, value and longevity of current and future trees on the site. Eliminating livestock from woodlands is the first step toward a healthier, more productive forest. As mentioned earlier in this paper, ice storm is a natural phenomenon caused by nature whereas forest fire are a result of human actions and preventable. One of the major differences between fire and ice storm is the rate of damage. Forest fire has a direct impact on the woodlands by changing the diversity of the landscape. Forest fire wipes out an entire landscape of trees causing a release of carbon dioxide. This ââ¬Ëin lieuâ⬠effect results in global warming as well as greenhouse effect. The release of carbon dioxide has a long-term effect to our ecosystem. Carbon dioxide is trapped in our ozone layer making airways less preamble. This trapping effect eventually radiates heat causing global warming. The long-term effect is hazardous and changes our biodiversity. Ice storm has very little affect to our ozone layer. Damage to woodlands as a result of ice storm is concentrated within that area. Ice storm does not spread like fire does so areas that have been hit by an ice storm affect woodlands Pests and disease slowly eroded the quantity as well as quality of woodland. Infected woodland slows the development of growth by eroding the soil limiting the production of trees. Pest control and good forest management could improve the quality and well as productivity in these areas. Pests and diseases cause a slow change in biodiversity. As the woodland become infested, animals feeding from leafs and branch find it less desirable, eventually leaving the area in search of more suitable woodland. Similarly, forest fire, pests and disease spread but at a much slower rate. These agents infect the trees, eventually penetrating the roots and moving on to the next host. As mentioned previous, ice storm does not spread, rather the effect stays within the area. To conclude, fire and pests/disease are similar in the way these agents spread and infect their host. The preceding sentence can be best thought of as a virus infected itâ⬠s host as an analogy. Fire spreads at a much faster rate than pests/disease and the impact are instant. Both of these agents have long-term effect, which does not work in our favor. Ice storm affects the area it hits and will not spread. Furthermore, ice storms are predictable whereas fire is not since the cause of fire is human mistake and is hard to predict. Ice storms are not preventable but human actions can be prevented. The potential of damage from fire is far more severe than that of ice storm. We must increase the awareness to ensure that our woodland remains healthy and protect our ecosystem.
